Not to sound cliched or anything, but how does one mend a broken heart?

What things can one do to alleviate the situation? (and no jumping from guy to guy or girl to girl!)

How long does one feel heartbreak for?

What does one do when they see or are in a situation where there must be contact with the one that caused the heart break?

A general question, so I can try and figure this out..
