I would want to stay home too, since you have a newborn. How many people would be there? Would everybody think you were terrible for not passing the baby around? If I did go, everybody would not be holding the new baby, and also I would think it would be hard to keep your 3 year old from getting the virus if somebody did have it. Also, I lose it as it is if somebody coughs around me or anything, lol, so I would probably just stay home, since it is flu season, and you have no idea what your family has been doing or who they have been around. I think it is in the best interest of your kids to stay home this year.
Unless H1N1 had been going around in my family, I would still go. You could very well pick up the flu from the grocery store. I would be very careful with the newborn, and have people wash their hands before holding the baby.
To me it only makes sense if you keep your immediate family insulated at home with prescious little contact with the outside world until flu season is over. But, follow your gut. If you end up catching H1N1 shortly after the holidays, you’ll be kicking yourself.
I am pregnant and have a toddler. We’re not going to the extended family event, but just to the grandparents. We’re not really doing or going anywhere this flu season- I grocery shop at walmart after 9pm to avoid crowds… lol. Its only a few months out of our lives- we’re fine.
We’re not doing the vaccine, and christmas is about 8 weeks before I am due, so we’re just being a little cautious.
No one is upset by it at all, they all totally understand. A few of the people in the family work for the heath service run by the state and are in complete agreement with our decision. Once the flu season is over and baby is here we’ll all get together again en-mass. Until then we’re just keeping our distance.
I would say no unless one family member is getting really old. Its whats best for the baby at this point. AT every family reunion the infant will be passed from person to person. Which touch can infact spread diseases it could be too dangerous for you to take your baby maybe you could hire a babysitter to watch the baby, or a nanny.
screw N1H1….my life wont be controlled by a common cold.
Before my baby was even born family had been asking us about coming around for family gatherings for holidays. I had said that more than likely not, but I wouldn’t commit to anything till the time came. Well, my son was born about 11 days ago and I am not as afraid as I thought I would be. I have had relatives come over for visits. Plenty of hand washing going on and no kissing the baby allowed. We probably WILL go to thanksgiving dinner as long as it’s not a house full of extended relatives coming over. I will just be clear about the kissing and hand washing, and probably try to limit passing around the baby . Also, I will definitely be finding out if anyone is sick or has been very recently before going. Congratulations on the new baby, have a great holiday regardless of your decision. I’m sure you will do what you think is best, don’t let others (family) try to tell you what that is, you are the mommy.
No- we will go to everything as normal. Our family is pretty good about either staying home if they are sick. I am actually more concerned about my husband’s 97 year old grandmother. She is coming for a few weeks during the holidays. And my niece always seems to be getting sick. I hope the grandmother doesn’t get sick from her.
