how can i get my ex back?

I have split from my ex, (my choice not his) and really want him back, i havent stopped liking him, and i really need help. the thing is i havnt spoken to him for 4 months and dont want it to be weird to just randomly text or interent message him. His friend has recently got with my bestfriend, but im not sure if he likes somebody else or how i should go about this.
